For more than twenty years, Indiana Jones has found a way to overcome virtually every fast moving, hair raising obstacle he’s confronted, but out dueling the much anticipated “Sex And The City” movie proved to much for the well worn archaeologist this weekend.

The SATC movie, which opened Friday, took in more than $55 million in it’s first weekend, pushing “Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” into second place with $46 million. But the two week total for “Indy” is a staggering $216.9 million, distancing itself from other summer release competitors.

“Sex And The City”, which originally aired on HBO for nine years, also outperformed analyst’s forecasts, which expected an opening weekend of around $30 million. But, according to Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., women flocked to theaters in huge numbers to view the opening of the self-proclaimed “chick flick”. They accounted for 85 percent of first week ticket holders. “There were women that came in and bought out entire theaters in advance and invited all their friends”, he said.

Rounding out the top five at the box office were:

3. “The Strangers”, starring Liv Tyler ($20.7 million)

4. “Ironman” ($14 million), and…

5. “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” ($13 million)

I knew this one would do good, wasn’t sure how it would rate against Indi. Bet they are thrilled!

My wife called this. I did not think “Sex” would be the biggest draw for the weekend.
