Why Are Women Fascinated With “Mr. Big”?

I may step on a few toes here, but I’m going to admit that I’m not the biggest fan of “Sex and The City”. As a matter of fact, I’m not much of a fan at all. Maybe it’s because I’m a guy and view the show as some kind of “chick flick”, but I do know a few guys who watch it too. Maybe I don’t fully understand the premise of four successfully functional women living such woefully dysfunctional lives.

Maybe that’s the true attraction of the program. Could it be that they make so many other women feel like their lives aren’t such a mess, especially when it comes to relationships. Or, maybe people just relate to the emotional dysfunction. Whatever it is, I just can’t seem to grasp a hold of it (and I’ve tried once or twice, just to keep from feeling like a cultural moron).

With all of that said, I think the biggest thing that I’m confused about is the fascination with “Mr. Big”. Now, though I’m not a fan of the show, I’m bright enough to know that the name “Big” refers to the anatomical pipe dream that most women believe guarantees sexual fulfillment. But in this program, the reference to “Big” goes even farther.

This guy just so happens to be big in every way. In other words, he’s got it all. He’s handsome, he’s filthy rich, he’s got a big house, big car, smokes big cigars, and to top it all off, I’ assuming he has a big… Well you know. So, how can we normal guys here in the real world even compete for real world women, when “Sex and The City” sets the standard so high and gives the perception that women shouldn’t settle for less than they can dream about. And what reasonably sane woman wouldn’t want a “Mr. Big”?

In my opinion, Chris Noth does play a reasonably passable Mr. Big in “Sex And The City”. But my concept of what a Mr. Big might be would lean more to the guy in the R. Kelly song “Showdown”, featuring Ronald Isley. My experience has been that more men play at being Mr. Bigg, than actually live that life. In the real world, Mr. Big to me would be more like a Brad Pitt, or Sean “Diddy” Combs, whose wealth and media conglomerate affords him the lifestyle of excessive privilege. These guys live big every day,  and don’t have to pretend.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m told that I’m a good looking guy. I’ve done a little modeling, played football in college, and still keep myself in pretty good shape. It’s not that I’m lacking in the “…well you know” department, either. I’m told that I’m not a bad guy, but I strive for improvement, but with all of that said, I’m just regular. Occasionally, I’ll even experiment with a cigar (ala’ Bill Clinton). But, my home is modest, I guess I’ll just have to do with my Acura, and I’m a long way from being filthy rich. Just the same, I’m not a bad guy.

I hope the movie version of the popular series does well. I just don’t want women to walk away with any unrealistic expectations about what to look for in a man. Sure, who wouldn’t want the rich, handsome hunk with the big “package”. It’s just that some of those other guys (oops, I mean us other guys) need love too.

So, what kind of man are you really looking for?

I think you’re underestimating women. A lot of people watch the show for pure entertainment, knowing that it’s a fantasy. In reality, many women are quite happy with regular guys.

You know I only watched one episode and never watched again. I think Lolli is right though it’s all about the entertainment angle of it. If it wasn’t funny or dramatic they wouldn’t be so popular.
