Britney Spears and WWE Top List For Most Searched In 2008
Britney Spears has certainly had a down and up year, and she’s been on almost everyone’s list for one thing or another, so it comes as no surprise that there have been more search requests for Britney Spears in 2008 than for any other celebrity.
What was surprising, at least to me, was that WWE was the second most requested search of the year. World Wrestling Entertainment lost some of it’s market share to the bloodier mixed martial arts pay-per-view telecasts, but made up the difference by marketing more video games and live events.
President-elect Barack Obama became a full fledged celebrity and inspired the entire nation with his message of change. That message helped get him into the White House, and elevated him to the number three position for most search requests for the year. But, the way he’s been holding almost daily press conferences since the election, he may be aiming to increase his search status in 2009.
The rest of the top ten most requested searches were as follows:
4. Miley Cyrus - She may be America’s next pop princess.
5. RuneScape - This multi-player game has a huge international following.
6. Jessica Alba - Getting married and having a baby helped increase her search marketability.
7. Naruto - I’ve got no clue whatsoever about this one, but I guess he’s popular enough with the gaming crowd.
8. Lindsey Lohan - This one I know well, and actually thought she’d rank higher. But, Lindsey’s been more popular for her trip to rehab, getting fired from “Ugly Betty”, and her relationship with Samantha Ronson than for any acting that she’s done.
9. Angelina Jolie - Need I say more? Just the mention of her name attracts web searches.
10. American Idol - This year’s competition created two Goliaths named David who have ruled Internet downloads as much as the show has ruled the ratings.
